Newsletter August 2010
We have been busy at Captive Audience launching our new website. If you haven’t already visited, take a look. You’ll find it a lot more interactive with added search functionality to help you find the right person for your event, together with profiles and photos for each speaker. We currently have around a third of our speakers and entertainers loaded, and have 2 staff working on getting the rest in by the end of October.
It’s going to be an interesting month or two leading up the local body elections being held 9 October. The result of these elections, particularly in Auckland with the new Super City coming into being, will affect many businesses in ways we haven’t imagined yet. There is still talk about a “double-dip” recession which is when GDP growth slides back to negative after a quarter or two of positive growth. We have had two straight increases in the OCR and GST will rise to 15% in October. A timely reminder that to be successful in our chosen fields, we need to focus on what we are good at and devise strategies to survive the highs and lows of our current environment. Learn from others how we can be better. More than ever, our business success will be about people and process development.
Thoughts for the Month:
- "A man who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his back on the crowd." James Crook
- "You were born an original. Don't die a copy." John Mason
- "When someone does something well, applaud! You will make two people happy." Samuel Goldwyn
- "It's a strange thing, you have said it thousands of times I am sure… you will never know what you can do until you try. However the sad truth is - that most people never try anything until they know they can do it." Bob Proctor
- “People don't buy for logical reasons. They buy for emotional reasons." Zig Ziglar
- “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak. Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen." Winston Churchill
- “Humour is like a rubber sword. It allows you to make a point without drawing blood”. Mary Hirsch
Lateral Thinking Problem: A man lives on the 10th floor of a building. Every day he takes the elevator down to the ground floor to go to work. When he returns on sunny days, he takes the elevator to the 7th floor and walks up the stairs to reach his apartment on the 10th floor. On rainy days, he takes the elevator all the way to the 10th floor. He hates walking so why does he get off on the seventh floor on sunny days? Answer at the end of this newsletter.
